Summary
The IDEAS Study is an open-label, longitudinal cohort study to assess the impact of amyloid PET on patient outcomes under Coverage with Evidence (CED) in patients meeting appropriate use criteria (AUC) for amyloid PET. The IDEAS Study has provided the strongest Phase IV data to date supporting the clinical utility of amyloid PET scanning. The IDEAS Study was sponsored and managed by the American College of Radiology and directed by the Alzheimer’s Association.
About This Data Partner
The IDEAS Study was developed in response to the 2013 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) National Coverage Decision on amyloid PET imaging in dementia and neurodegenerative disease. The IDEAS Study protocol was approved by CMS in 2015. A total of approximately 18,295 Medicare beneficiaries age 65 and older meeting AUC were enrolled over 22 months at ~600 sites throughout the United States. Study participants were recruited into one of two sub-groups: (1) progressive, unexplained MCI, and (2) dementia of uncertain cause. The aims of the study were as follows: AIM 1: Determine if amyloid PET associated with a ≥30% change in composite patient management endpoint between the pre-PET and post-PET visit, separately in MCI and dementia (pub: https://bit.ly/3SCscLr) AIM 2: Determine if amyloid PET is associated with a ≥10% reduction in 12-months CMS claims-derived hospital admissions and emergency department (ED) visits in study patients vs. controls (pub: https://bit.ly/3u7Yp2Q)
Additional Information
Data Available
IDEAS data includes demographics and socio-demographic data; medical history data, limited to indicators (yes or no) of histories of conditions associated with cognitive impairment and overall health; tests performed prior to enrollment to assess cognitive complaint, limited to indicators of the test types without results; physicians’ differential diagnoses before and after amyloid PET; components of physicians’ management plan before and after amyloid PET; results of amyloid PET; and reading conditions for amyloid PET assessment. The dose of the tracer used is also available. The amyloid PET scans are also available via separate request. Scans are distributed with PII and PHI removed from the DICOM headers.
